Instructor Profile: Sarah McCormack
I have practiced Lee Style Tai Chi since joining one of the West Yorkshire classes run by Mark Popplewell in 1996. By completing the teacher training course with Howard Gibbon in 2004 I have been able to teach in West Yorkshire and now in Cumbria. The philosophy of the art combines well with my work as a professional gardener.
New members are always welcome.
What to expect in the class:
Warm up followed by ‘Kai Men’ and ‘Dao Yin’ breathing and stretching exercises (qigong).
Kai Men (Chinese Yoga) Exercises are broken down into two parts, the first concentrates on deep breathing and gentle stretching. This prepares the body for the second part, the extensions, which are done by breathing normally and with more emphasis on the stretching.
Dao Yin (Respiratory Therapy) focuses on three levels of deep breathing with light stretching to improve energy levels and calm the mind.
These exercises are followed by Lee Style Tai Chi Form and Tai Chi Dance instruction and practice. The Lee Style Tai Chi Form is a series of slow graceful movements practiced with slow deep breaths. It exercises both mind and body, helping you to relax. The Tai Form is described as meditation in movement.
The Lee Style Tai Chi Dance is more aerobic, an enjoyable and stimulating series of movements practiced at a faster pace than the Form but using many of the same foot positions.
The teaching is supportive and friendly. Students finish the session feeling relaxed and invigorated.
